Tips on Selecting a Remodeling Contractor

Some Do's and Don'ts when hiring a remodeling contractor:
• Do verify the contractor's name, address, telephone number, and credentials.
• Do ask how long the contractor has been in business; they should haveat least five years experience.
• Do ask for at least 3 completed job references.
• Do call the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against thecontractor or if any action is pending.
• Do ask for a certificate of insurance coverages. It is for your protection.
• Don't automatically jump at the lowest estimate, especially if it is more than 20 percent lower than the other estimates you've received. The chances are good that they will be unable to complete your job.

Always remember the Laws of Economics

It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little.

When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot—it cannot be done.

If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

~ John Ruskin (1819 - 1900), English art critic and writer
